1. All
taught degree applicants (e.g. MA, MSc): please give your reasons for
applying and a description of your major interests.
2. MSc
Comparative and Cross-Cultural / Social Research Methods: please provide
a short statement setting out the subject of your proposed research.
3. All
research applicants in the humanities and social sciences (MPhil and
DPhil): please attach a statement setting out the subject of your
proposed research, the reason why you have chosen that research topic,
the manner in which you envisage approaching your research and whether
you would prefer any particular supervisor.
4. All
research applicants in science and engineering research (MPhil and DPhil):
please indicate the general area of your proposed research. If any
particular project(s) would be of interest to you, and/or if you would
prefer any particular supervisor, please indicate.
Taught Programmes.
This is your
opportunity to explain the reasons why you are applying for this
programme. Please outline your special academic interests and your
purpose and
objective in undertaking postgraduate study. This information is
important in the selection process.
Research Proposal.
If you are
applying for a research degree you will need a research proposal and if
you are particularly interested in the work of one of our members of
faculty or a research team you may wish to consider requesting a
particular supervisor. The amount of detail required in a research
proposal varies between subjects. Social science and humanities subjects
tend to require a highly developed research proposal giving a clear
outline of the specific research area. However, in some science subjects
it is more usual to outline a general area of interest, as the nature of
the research discipline is more tied to ongoing research projects, the
availability of experimental equipment, etc. Again a discussion with an
academic contact in the department will help clarify the right level of
detail for your research proposal. Please also provide details of any
publications and of any other research experience and/or relevant
preliminary reading that you have already undertaken.
